Mental Health is a Journey

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a subset of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) that is designed to treat even the most resistant mental health conditions. By merging various evidence-based practices, our Columbia-trained team helps individuals reclaim and come to terms with their lives.

What is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)?

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a form of talk therapy created for the most complex patients. Dialectical means two opposing ideas, which in the case of DBT, are acceptance and change. The core four Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills focus on uniting this opposition through:

1. Emotional Regulation
2. Distress Tolerance
3. Mindfulness
4. Interpersonal Effectiveness

By building these four skill areas, patients learn to respond to the world around them thoughtfully, rather than reactively.

It’s helpful to understand cognitive behavioral therapy vs dialectical behavioral therapy: while CBT focuses on changing thinking patterns, DBT emphasizes acceptance, validation, and balancing change.

CBT vs DBT on conditions:
We often use dialectical behavior therapy for depression when standard CBT hasn’t fully addressed emotional dysregulation or suicidal ideation.

Though DBT is best known for borderline personality, some people adapt dialectical behavior therapy for ADHD to improve emotional regulation and impulsivity in ADHD presentations.

We also apply dialectical behavior therapy for anxiety, especially in those whose worry is tied to emotional vulnerability and coping deficits.

In some treatment plans, we incorporate dialectical behavior therapy for PTSD to complement trauma processing with skills modules.

Additionally, we sometimes use dialectical behavior therapy and eating disorders protocols (DBT-ED) to support those with disordered eating and emotional dysregulation.

What can DBT be used to treat?
Benefits of DBT

Social Skills

Interpersonal functioning allows you to show up in relationships how you want.

Radical Acceptance

Reduces shame and improves overall confidence.

Our model often supports DBT for trauma, helping individuals integrate distress tolerance and boundary skills in recovery from traumatic stress.

Lessens Hospitalizations

Data suggests that DBT limits the number of inpatient hospitalizations.

Mindfulness

Allows you to live in the present and find joy in everyday life.

Resilience

By building distress tolerance, you can be prepared to face whatever life may throw at you.

Many patients benefit from DBT for depression, particularly when emotional regulation, self-harm, or mood instability overlap with depressive symptoms.

Dr. Ryan Sultan, MD Senior Psychiatrist at Integrative Psych

Meet The Founder

Dr. Sultan, son of psychiatrist, is a dual board certified mental health physician who has made it his life’s mission to explore, learn and practice the many treatments for the mind and its troubles.

Dr. Sultan’s path has led him to extensive training in therapies ranging from meditation and mindfulness to practical cognitive behavioral therapy and deep psychodynamic therapy. As a physician, he has explored how classical and innovative medical treatments can foster healing of the mind as well as personal growth.

These extensive ranges of therapies can be effective for many individuals, however they often take years to get results and many individuals hit walls in their treatment—getting only limited benefits.

Dr. Sultan founded Integrative Psych to push past the barriers of traditional mental health treatment by using naturally derived compounds in conjunction with conventional treatments such as medications, lifestyle interventions and psychotherapy to heal the pain and struggles in our minds beyond what traditional mental health treatments can accomplish.
