Meeting a celebrity is an exciting experience, but our expectations are often shaped by media portrayals that don’t reflect reality. Cognitive distortions like the halo effect and selective attention cause us to idealize celebrities, associating them with traits like intelligence or kindness simply due to their status or appearance. The media further reinforces this by showcasing their successes while downplaying flaws. When we meet a celebrity in person, the reality may not match our expectations, leading to cognitive dissonance and even feelings of inadequacy. This is because we unconsciously compare ourselves to them, which can negatively impact self-esteem. However, recognizing that celebrities are just people—with their own insecurities and challenges—can help us break free from unrealistic comparisons. Instead of idolizing them, we should treat them with the same kindness and respect we give ourselves and others.
